Full fibre installation guide: what to expect

How is full fibre installed?

Full fibre installation is usually quick and easy. Here's what will happen on the day of the installation:

  • Planning the fibre route: Our engineer will work their magic to bring the fibre optic cable from the distribution point into your home in the smoothest way possible. They can either run the cable overhead (using a telegraph pole) or underground, depending on how your network is built. And if any digging is needed, they’ll explain exactly where and why, all with a friendly smile!

  • Installing the equipment: Inside your home, it is likely that the engineer will need to drill a small hole (10mm) to bring the cable in. Don’t worry, it’s a quick job, and any mess will be cleaned up afterward. They'll then install a device called the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which connects to the fibre cable and brings the internet into your home.

  • Testing and setting up: Once everything’s set up, our engineer will give the connection a quick test to make sure it’s all running smoothly. Then, they’ll set up your router and ensure everything is turned on and transmitting a Wi-Fi signal, so you're ready to use your new, super-fast internet.

Although it’s rare, if the installation turns out to be a bit trickier than expected or if something pops up—like access issues or tricky wiring—our engineer will talk you through the options on the day. We’ll usually find a simple workaround that’s tailored to your property. Just bear with us, as these issues can be a bit unpredictable and sometimes require working with other suppliers or local authorities who don’t always move at the same lightning speed we do. But rest assured, we’ll do everything we can to get you up and running as quickly as possible!

Is there any cost for the installation?

The standard installation is free of charge, as long as we can connect you using the usual method. If your property requires any special arrangements, such as a long driveway or an underground connection instead of using a pole, there may be an additional fee. We’ll always discuss any potential extra costs, known as 'exceptional engineering charges,' with you in advance, so you’re fully informed before we begin the installation.

How long does it take to get broadband installed

The time it takes to get your broadband installed can vary, but most installations are pretty quick and straightforward. On average, it takes about 2-3 hours to get everything sorted, depending on your setup. Once the engineer’s done, they’ll give everything a test to make sure your Wi-Fi is cruising along smoothly. From the moment you place your order to being fully connected, we’re aiming to get you online in about 14 days – pretty speedy, right?

Do I need an engineer to install full fibre broadband?

To get your full fibre broadband set up, one of our engineers will need to drop by. The process usually takes about 2-3 hours, so it’s a fairly quick job, but it does involve a bit of hands-on work to ensure everything’s running smoothly.

Does someone need to be home for internet installation?

Yes, we ask that someone be at home while our engineer does their thing! The person needs to stay on the premises the whole time, and they must be at least 18 years old. This way, everything gets hooked up smoothly and you’ll be ready to go with your new full fibre connection.

Where will the router and other full fibre broadband equipment go?

When we install your full fibre broadband, our engineer will choose the best spot for the equipment, but the main components – like the router and the Optic Network Terminal (ONT) – will usually be placed in a central, convenient location in your home. The ONT will typically be positioned near where the fibre cable enters your property.

As for your router, our engineer will help find the ideal spot to ensure you get the best, most reliable connection throughout your home. It's generally best to keep the router in a central location, away from thick walls or large metal objects, to avoid any interference.

Our engineer will fine-tune everything to get your Wi-Fi running like a dream, so you can enjoy lightning-fast internet wherever you need it. Have a favourite spot in mind? Just let us know – we’re more than happy to make it work for you!

Will I be able to use my Wi-Fi right away after installation?

Absolutely! Once your full fibre installation is all set, you’ll be able to dive into your Wi-Fi right away. Our engineer will make sure everything’s up and running, from setting up your router to testing the connection, so you’re good to go before they head off. They’ll even lend a hand getting two of your main devices connected, so you can start enjoying your super-fast internet in no time. And if you run into any hiccups after the installation, just give us a shout – we’ll be more than happy to sort it out for you!

What is an optical network terminal and what does it look like?

An optical network terminal (ONT) is a device that helps bring fibre-optic internet into your home.

Think of it like a translator: the fibre-optic cable carries super-fast internet signals as light, and the ONT converts those light signals into regular internet signals that your router can use.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Fibre-optic cable brings fast internet to your home.
  2. ONT changes the light signals into internet data.
  3. Router then takes that data and gives you Wi-Fi to use on your devices.

So, the ONT is what makes it possible for you to use fibre-optic internet inside your home.

As for what it looks like, it’s usually about the size of a small book and doesn’t take up much space. You’ll find it near the point where the fibre cable comes in, often mounted on a wall. It has a few lights on the front to show you everything’s working fine. It’s not fancy, but it does the job, and our engineer will make sure it’s in a good spot so your Wi-Fi runs smoothly.

Installation FAQs

Does full fibre installation require drilling?

Plus icon.

In most cases yes. We’ll need to install new cabling to your home, which typically involves a small amount of drilling. The hole is just 10mm, enough to bring the fibre cable through the external walls or connect it to your internal wiring. The drilling is minimal, and our engineer will handle everything carefully to ensure no damage occurs. Once the job is done, they’ll tidy up and leave everything as neat and clean as they found it.

Do engineers need to drill if I already have full fibre and am just switching providers?

Plus icon.

Companies are not permitted to use equipment from other providers, so we’ll need to install new cabling, which may involve some drilling. We use our own cables to ensure the service is reliable and optimised for performance.

Do you need to dig up my drive to install full fibre broadband?

Plus icon.

Our engineer will first try to use existing methods, like connecting to an overhead pole or using an underground duct if one is available. If we can’t take that route, we may need to do a little digging to bring the fibre cable in. We will only dig up your driveway if it's essential to run cables to your premises, but we'll always strive to find the best solution to avoid this and minimise any inconvenience. Before we do anything, we’ll walk you through the plan and make sure you’re happy with it. And of course, once the work is done, we’ll tidy everything up and leave it just as we found it!

Can I still have the full fibre installation if I’m renting the property or haven’t moved in yet?

Plus icon.

Yes, you can still have the fibre installation if you’re renting or haven’t moved in yet. The only thing we’ll need is permission from the current owner or landlord before we carry out any work. It’s always best to check with them first, and we’re happy to work with you to make the process as smooth as possible.

How quickly can I book my install?

Plus icon.

Once you place your order, a friendly member of our customer service team will reach out to you within 24 hours. If a standard installation is possible at your property, we'll aim to schedule your full fibre installation appointment within 7 days. In rare cases, we may need to conduct a quick pre-installation survey if your property requires some extra work. This is just a brief visit where our engineer assesses the best way to get you connected. After the pre-installation survey, we’ll set your installation date within another 7 days.

How quickly can my full fibre be activated?

We offer installation slots from Monday to Saturday, with two available time frames: the morning slot (8am–12pm) and the afternoon slot (12pm–4:30pm). When you book an installation, the engineers may arrive at any time within the chosen time slot. For example, if you book an afternoon slot for Monday, the engineers can arrive anytime between 12pm and 4:30pm. Please note that the installation typically takes 2–3 hours. If the engineers arrive at 4:30pm, they will start the installation at that time, so it may run until 6:30pm or later.

Can I reschedule my installation appointment?

Plus icon.

Yes, you can reschedule or cancel your installation appointment, but you must notify us at least 48 hours in advance. If you fail to do so, additional charges may apply.

If you need to change your appointment, please contact us as soon as you can!

What’s a pre-install survey?

Plus icon.

A pre-installation survey is a quick visit from one of our friendly engineers to have a look at your property before we get started with the full fibre installation. This is usually only needed if your home needs a bit of extra work or has access challenges that require a little more planning. The engineer will figure out the best way to bring the fibre into your home and make sure everything’s ready for a smooth install. After that, we’ll sort out your installation date, typically within a week.

That said, don’t worry – most of the time, full fibre installation is super straightforward, and we won’t need to do a survey. If a standard installation is possible, the engineer will visit just once to complete the installation, which should only take around 2-3 hours.

Once you place your order, our lovely customer service team will be in touch within 24 hours to fill you in on the next steps. They’ll let you know if a pre-installation survey is needed or if you can go ahead and book your installation appointment straight away.
