GoFibre Awarded Scotland’s Biggest Regional Project Gigabit Contract, in the North East of Scotland
GoFibre has been announced as the chosen supplier to deliver full fibre broadband to around 63,000 hard-to-reach premises across the North East of Scotland.
With funding provided by UK Government, the Scottish Government is leading the award and delivery of this new Project Gigabit contract that will benefit some of the most rural areas stretching across Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Angus, Dundee, Moray, Highland and parts of Perth and Kinross.
The news was announced in July, in Forfar by Scottish Government Minister for Business Richard Lochhead, alongside GoFibre CEO Neil Conaghan .
Commenting on this highly significant contract win for GoFibre, Neil Conaghan, CEO said, “This Project Gigabit contract award is a hugely exciting development for the north east of Scotland, and for GoFibre, transforming broadband connectivity across a substantial region of Scotland.
"As a fast-growing Scottish independent broadband company, GoFibre is committed to improving connectivity in rural and hard-to-reach areas and we cannot wait to get started on this major infrastructure project.
"We're thrilled to be working with the Scottish and UK Governments to bring world-class full fibre broadband connectivity to a large number of homes and businesses.
"Building on the back of our Project Gigabit contract award for the Borders and East Lothian earlier this year, it shows GoFibre is at the heart of rural broadband development in Scotland."
Project Gigabit is the UK government’s programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband. The Scottish Government is playing a key role in delivering Project Gigabit procurements in Scotland, working closely with the UK government to deploy funding to build on Scotland’s own Reaching 100% programme and commercial activity.
In February this year. GoFibre was announced as the supplier for the first Project Gigabit contract in Scotland, for the Borders and East Lothian.
The fast, reliable connections delivered by Project Gigabit will primarily benefit rural communities across the UK. The programme targets homes and businesses that are not included in broadband companies’ commercial plans,or other publicly-funded programmes like R100, reaching parts of the country that would otherwise miss out.
Future-proofed connectivity plays a key role in growing Scotland’s economy, tackling the climate emergency, and making sure everyone can access high quality, modern public services – no matter where they live.
