Melrose Youth Rugby Players Unveil New Shirts Ahead of Hornets Festival

Melrose Rugby and Scottish independent broadband provider GoFibre unveiled the new Melrose Youth jerseys for the new season ahead of a major youth tournament taking place on 13 September.

Players gathered at the Greenyards to unveil the new co-branded jerseys which all the team’s youth players, from ages 5-18, will be wearing when they're in action this season.

This year’s GoFibre Melrose Hornets Festival is a special celebration of mini rugby as it is taking place during Melrose Rugby’s 150th anniversary year. Set to be the largest Hornets Festival yet, it will bring together around 70 teams and more than 1,000 young players from clubs across the Borders, Edinburgh, central Scotland and further afield. Across the day, teams, comprising players from Primary 3 to Primary 7 age, will take part in a packed programme of rugby during the festival, which is taking place at The Greenyards, Melrose.

Borders-born GoFibre’s support for the festival is part of a three-year deal with Melrose Rugby as the club’s main youth sponsor. The deal sees GoFibre as a jersey sponsor and headline sponsor of the Melrose Wasps Sevens and Hornets tournaments. This latest commitment to the club follows on from GoFibre sponsoring the Melrose Sevens for the last three years.

GoFibre’s investment in youth rugby goes hand-in-hand with its full-fibre broadband rollout in the Borders, with over 34,000 premises now ready-to-connect in the region, and almost 1200 homes in Melrose itself.

GoFibre was named High Growth Business of the Year – for the second year in a row – at the Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards last month and is Scotland’s only 5-star broadband provider on Trustpilot.

Sam Calvert, Chief Commercial Officer at GoFibre, said:

“As the local broadband provider for Melrose and the Borders, we are proud to be the headline sponsor for the Hornets Festival, which is a cornerstone youth rugby tournament. With it being Melrose Rugby’s 150th anniversary, it’s great that GoFibre can carry on our strong relationship with the club and help support the next generation of players.

“We wish all of the teams taking part all the very best, and we look forward to an exciting day of youth rugby.”

Douglas Crawford, General Manager of Melrose Rugby, said:

“I’m delighted our new Youth Jerseys have arrived and GoFibre is front and centre as our youth sponsor for the next three years. GoFibre has been a long-term supporter of rugby here at the Greenyards and it’s great to see this next stage of partnership come to life. I know all our young players will be buzzing to receive their new jerseys and especially with their first outing being at our very own 150th anniversary special GoFibre Hornets Festival. It’s shaping up to be a cracking day of rugby for young players from all around Scotland and I look forward to having GoFibre at the heart of it.”
